SOM students win first place at APICS Case Study Competition 2009!

APICS logoStudents majoring in Operations Management at CSUN won the First Place at the 3rd Annual Student Case Study competition sponsored by the Southwest District of the Association for Operations Management. The competition was held in Torrance, CA during February 6-7, 2009. The CSUN team outperformed other participants from various universities including Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and University of Nevada. The CSUN team was also a winner of the 1st Annual competition in 2007.

The Team
This year's CSUN team members are: Eric Bair, Kaloyan Borisov, Christa Elias, Roger Grato and David Roman.
The team will go on to compete in the international finals to be held in October 2009. It will be sponsored by APICS and FedEx. APICS will be helping our team with travel expenses.

Congratulations team! Your dedication and hard work paid off and you have made all of us at CSUN proud! You are also an inspiration and role model for SOM students to follow in coming years.

The competition  
Participants in the competition were provided with a real life case study from a company faced with specific operations management problems.  The teams met to develop solutions that were presented to a team of judges in written form as well as an oral presentation to other students and operations professionals from APICS Southwest District.

Significance of the win
The competition provides the participating institutions an opportunity to compare their program content, teaching pedagogies and quality. It also helps students share educational experiences, utilize their classroom education in solving real world problems.

Teams get an opportunity to explore potential employers during the event. Teams are encouraged to bring their resume to share with APICS professional members & sponsoring companies during networking opportunities.

Students with an education in Systems and Operations Management are in high demand by industries such as airlines, transportation, aerospace, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, insurance, banking, health care, education, and government. Our graduates perform jobs in project management, operations planning and scheduling, quality management and assurance, supply chain and logistics management, and system analysis and design.
