Two Ways for Faculty to Email Students in a Class

Faculty can contact students in their classes two ways:

  1. Majordomo Class Lists
  2. Email Feature of the Class Roster

I. Majordomo Class Lists

Majordomo lists are automatically created for you with your personal CSUN email address, and the CSUN email address of every student enrolled in your specific class section.

Using Your Majordomo Class List

The majordomo class lists can be utilized by sending an email message to one of the two email addresses available for your list:

  1. The first format is based on the class number and semester. The format follows the formatting of "class[semester].[class number]–c@csun.edu". For example, if you were teaching a class with the class number "12345" in the Fall of 2006, the address to use would be "classFA06.12345–c@csun.edu".
  2. The second format is based on the semester, the class name, and the section number. The format follows the formatting of "[semester].[abbreviated class name].[section number]–c@csun.edu". For example, if you were teaching English 101, section 3, in the Fall of 2006, the address to use would be "FA06.eng101.03–c@csun.edu".
  3. Any messages sent to this list, will automatically be distributed to the currently enrolled students in the class, each student receiving his or her own copy. The message will show as coming "From" you, through the mailing list (the students will not see the email addresses of the other people on the list).

II. Emailing Students from the Class Roster

Another option that is available to you is emailing your students from the Class Roster.

  1. This feature is available by logging into the myNorthridge Portal located at http://www.csun.edu.
  2. The View My Class Roster link is located under the Student Administration pagelet on the Faculty tab of your myNorthridge Portal page.
  3. Use this link to access the class roster for a given class. Once selected, you have the option of emailing your students directly from the class roster itself.
