The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences serves one of the nation’s most diverse urban regions. Our mission can be summed up in one word: relevance. Our fundamental purpose is to increase understanding of a complex and ever-changing world through excellence in teaching and applied research. Our students engage in studies that infuse them with a keen understanding of the issues facing our region and the world. Our faculty conducts research that addresses real world issues and provides thoughtful, innovative solutions for communities on a regional, national, and global scale.
The College’s ten departments enroll the largest number of students at California State University, Northridge. Our outstanding faculty, many of whom have received teaching awards and are nationally known scholars, excel at researching and teaching about real world problems from training culturally competent mental health researchers and conducting historical wetland mapping projects to assessing the convergence of radioactive transport and terrorist activity on freeways throughout Los Angeles to immersing students in a global policy environment in our award-winning Model United Nations program.
Many of our courses address issues that affect our region, our community and the global context. Our college has embraced an academic focus that maintains a special commitment to studying the problems of urban societies. We maintain a very active, dedicated group of faculty and students who engage in an applied curriculum that leads them into local communities to face some of our most challenging problems. Each year more than 800 students participate in internship projects in the Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley area. Graduating seniors in the last two years have received prestigious fellowships for graduate study, including Woodrow Wilson, Ford Foundation and National Science Institution Fellowships, and have been accepted at some of the nation's' outstanding institutions. The College ranks number one nationally among comprehensive universities in Social Sciences and in Psychology in the number of students who receive their B.A. and go on to successfully complete a Ph.D. Each year approximately 100 students from the college graduate with honors, almost one-quarter of all honor students at CSUN, and approximately 120 students receive departmental awards.
We provide our students and faculty with a highly engaging classroom environment that supports the latest new media technologies. Students of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences have access to open computer labs and wireless Internet throughout our buildings. Many of our departments also offer students free tutoring services to ensure they get the most out of their educational experiences. Our students who do not pursue graduate study emerge into the workplace to work for employers who know that they have developed critical thinking skills and diverse problem solving techniques in their time at California State University, Northridge. We believe we are here to educate tomorrow’s innovators.
We invite you to join us on an educational journey where academics matter, students matter, and community matters. More importantly, we invite you to discover through our faculty’s ground-breaking research the diverse and relevant educational experience we provide in the classroom environment. In the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, we place our students on a platform of academic excellence and ultimately, career success.
