WEB Du Bois“...born with a veil, and gifted with second-sight in this American world,--a world which yields him no self-consciousness, but only lets him see himself through the revelation of the other world. It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity.”

– W.E.B. Du Bois

Volunteer Coordinator: Tracy Reed

Hello fellow members! My name is Tracy Reed and I am the Volunteer Events Coordinator for AKD this year. I am an undergraduate who is exc
itedly looking forward to getting my BA in General Sociology this spring. I plan to pursue both an MA and a PhD (phew!) in Sociology with a focus on
medical sociology. I am interested in the sociological factors that influence healthcare delivery and patients’ perceptions of care.

I am also interested in how other outreach and advocacy centers, such as domestic violence centers and low-income neighborhood support providers, work together within a larger sociological framework. My interest in this was spurred on by my volunteer work as a court advocate at a local domestic violence shelter.

My long term goals include participation in longitudinal research related to my field, advocacy work, and teaching. In an ideal world, that would al
so involve a big house, on a huge plot of land, where I could rescue every stray dog I meet! As your Volunteer Events Coordinator, I will be responsible for working with some local outreach and support organizations to find opportunities where AKD can be of service. One event will be scheduled for fall semester and one event will be scheduled for the spring. I will try hard to find events that afford AKD members the opportunity to have fun, bond with each other, and provide needed support to a community partner.
