Bio

Deniza Mulaj is the Contracts, Grants, and Research Development Officer for the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at California State University, Northridge.

Before joining CSUN, Mulaj held various positions in and beyond academia. During 2019-2023, she was a Teaching Fellow at Ohio University, Media Arts and Studies Department, where she taught courses on mass communication. During 2018-2019, she was a grant writer and project lead for the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN Kosovo). At BIRN, Mulaj covered issues in the legal framework on inheritance and women’s rights to property in Kosovo, investigative journalism, and monitoring of public procurement, auditing, and recruitment in public institutions. Mulaj is also the co-founder and program manager for Balkan Society for Theory and Practice, an academic organization for critical research and academic and artistic collaboration in the Balkans.

Mulaj earned her B.S. degree in Public Policy and Economics from Rochester Institute of Technology in Kosovo and her M.A. in Anthropology from North Carolina State University. She is currently a doctoral candidate in the department of Mass Communications in Ohio University. Her research focuses on the intersection of media, violence, and ethnicity in the Balkans, with particular attention to media coverage of political uprisings in the region.
