Dr. Jaime Labastida

Noted Mexican poet, journalist, essayist, philosopher and scholar, Dr. Jaime Labastida, spoke to about 100 CSUN students and faculty on May 4th. His topic, "Revolutions: Unanswered Questions" centered on the linguistic diachronism of the word revolution.


Jaime Labastida, native of the state of Sinaloa, Mexico, holds a Ph. D in Philosophy from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He has been professor at the UNAM and President of El Colegio de Sinaloa. He is currently the President of the prominent publishing house Siglo XXI Editores. He is a member of the U.S. Academy of Spanish Letters. He has published many books on philosophical and literary topics. He has been the recipient of many awards in Mexico and in other countries, such as the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize 1996, the National Journalism Prize and National Arts and Sciences Award 2008. He has also received the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Fine Arts for his work as a writer. But he is, above all and as he likes to describe himself, "UNAM to the core."
