Dear Colleague:

Welcome to the May 2015 Issue of HR News.

One of the busiest and most exciting times on campus, this month offers plenty of opportunities to celebrate this year's accomplishments, and get ready for summer. In a few short weeks, we will join thousands of families and friends in commemorating and celebrating the academic achievement of approximately 10,600 undergraduate and graduate students as they graduate from California State University, Northridge. As a community we will offer our congratulations and best wishes to these students that we have connected with and supported throughout our work. Take a moment to enjoy the success of your students and know you have done well.

This year's group of graduates includes approximately 70 staff and faculty members who have pursued undergraduate, graduate and doctoral studies while working on campus. A very special congratulations to this group who now join the more than 1,400 "Home Grown" CSUN alumni faculty and staff.

Mark your calendars to stop by the Colleagues Room May 5th, 7th or 8th between 11:00 am – 2:00 pm to sign the Congratulatory Banner to the entire Class of 2015! The banner will hang in the Oviatt Quad during all campus commencement ceremonies.

On June 2nd, CSUN will celebrate the 49th Annual Staff Service and Recognition of Excellence Awards. The event celebrates staff and administrators who have achieved service milestones at five year increments (5, 10, 15, etc.) as well as outstanding achievement. Browse the 2015 List of Honored Staff scheduled to be recognized for their years of service so you can congratulate your colleagues!

As we acknowledge the achievements of our students and peers, it is important to chart our own wellbeing. In this vein, I invite you to find out about the Benefits of Asian Medicine on May 5th, where you can learn how to incorporate Asian Medicine (acupuncture and herbal treatment) to help adjust the body's energy to better deal with life's stress's and ailments. The Kaiser Permanente Mobile Health Vehicle will be on campus that day from 10 am to 3 pm to provide complimentary Biometric screenings to faculty and staff - you don't need to be a Kaiser member to participate. On May 7th HR will team up with the Klotz Health Center to present an orientation to Smoking Cessation for Faculty & Staff. Also, learn about the effects of diabetes and how to prevent and control them within any age at the Diabetes Informational, on May 12th.

Along with personal health, I encourage you to partake in events that will further advance your professional toolkit. Join Associate Vice President Dr. Crist Khachikian on May 6th to learn about paths to increase research and sponsored activities, and the impact they have on students, staff, and faculty at The Path to Doubling Research and the Impact on Students, Faculty, and Staff session. On May 19th, Deborah Flugum will facilitate a session on Navigating through the Procurement Trail, where you can learn from your campus procurement team, how they are committed to providing quality materials, on-time delivery and competitive pricing – and how you can enhance the purchasing process for your department. Finally, on May 21st, LACI@CSUN continues its Speaker Series with "So You Wanna Be a CEO" featuring Jim Goodrich, Dean of the College of Business and Economics at Cal State LA.
