Track 1. Meetings on Saturdays (some may occur after school if teachers prefer): Year 1 meetings, December 1, 2001- September 30, 2002; Saturday meetings will be held first half-day, 9 a.m. until noon; second half-day, 1 P.M.-4 P.M. (Years two and 3 will begin Oct. 1 and run until Sept. 30). Again, the first workshop scheduled will cover designing a syllabus for each teacher leader that will allow immediate implementation of the topics below. All first half-day workshops generally include lecture/discussion and at least one hands-on activity that is not just fun but precisely teaches a key concept. The field trips are not "sightseeing" but include collecting specimens and development of field research projects that are easily implemented with students. As noted earlier, the schedule below is tentative and may be altered so that a physical science and life science workshop are run simultaneously on the same day, in order to provide teachers with the material most relevant to their immediate teaching schedules. This may be necessary to facilitate immediate classroom implementation by all teachers.

December 2001 Topics: Cell Biology, Energy, Genes, Mendelian Genetics
January 2002 Topics: Recombinant DNA and Biotechnology, Circulation, Respiration Nerves, Hormones
February 2002 Topics: Digestion, Excretion, Embryonic Development, Ecology, Evolution
March 2002 Topics: Forces and Motion, Properties of Rocks, Plate Tectonics, Ocean Floors
April 2002 Topics: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Fossils and Evolution
May 2002 Topics: Energy and the Earth, Water and Oceans, Natural Hazards
June 2002 Field Trips - Biology and Geoscience, hands-on field trips to mountain, desert and tidal areas where teachers will collect specimens and develop inquiry-based field lessons
July, August 2002 CSP, NSF components

We have found that the longer a teacher participates in our programs, the more expert they become in teaching and leadership; therefore, we will encourage Eisenhower teachers to continue for more than one year. Some will; some won't. We will, however, develop completely new workshops each year, so that returning teachers will be always exposed to exciting new material.

Track 2 Schedule. As inquiry-based research training must be scheduled individually between research mentors and teachers, no specific timeline can be provided. Each teacher's timeline will be different. All research in the first year will take place from December 1, 2001 until September 30, 2002, with the Eisenhower component concentrated between December 1, 2001 and June 30, 2002. Years 2 and 3 will begin October 1 and end September 30. Most of the Eisenhower teachers' research work will be done after school on weekdays and on weekends. All teachers will be required to log in at least 120 (certified by their scientist mentors) hands-on research hours and will be required to develop a research report based on standard journal format. The paper will include specific classroom implementation results, as the year-round nature of the Eisenhower project allows classroom implementation during the time the teachers themselves are working on their own research projects. That's the beauty of this academy-style Eisenhower program. Here too, we will encourage teachers to participate for more than one year, so that they become real leaders in inquiry-based research science.
