How to Prepare for a Field Trip

Field trips are a vital enhancement of the student learning experience at the University.  The risk associated with off campus student field trips are mitigated by implementing reasonable risk management techniques. These include identifying the risks, assessing the likelihood and the extent of the potential incidents, selecting and implementing appropriate control measures and monitoring results and experiences.  As a minimum, the Risk Management Department suggests the following:

  1. Determine if the risks associated with the field trip are worth the educational experience
  2. Get all necessary departmental approval
  3. Prepare and communicate your plan to include:
    • Detailed itinerary
    • Safety and health precautions
    • Rules and requirements
    • Documentation and forms
    • Transportation arrangements
    • Emergency plan
