Ian Barnard, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor in the Department of English at California State University, Northridge.
I grew up in Johannesburg, where I earned a B.A. Honours degree in English from the University of the Witwatersrand, and completed my Ph.D. at the University of California, San Diego. I was a founding member of Queer Nation/San Diego.
I have been on the CSUN faculty since 2003, and particularly enjoy the diversity of students here. I live in downtown LA and love being surrounded by the art deco buildings.
My teaching and research interests include queer theory, queer film and video, and composition. I don’t believe in lecturing--all my classes are discussion-based. My publications include the book Queer Race: Cultural Interventions in the Racial Politics of Queer Theory and articles in journals like Radical Teacher and Women's Studies.
