September Offers Last Chance to Catch a Glimpse
of Mysteries of the Summer Night Sky at CSUN’s Planetarium
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Aug. 11, 2006) -- Star gazers have only a few more weeks to explore the mysteries of the summer night sky at Cal State Northridge’s Bianchi Planetarium. Beginning in October, the planetarium will offer every other Friday views of the autumn sky at night.
The first show begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be an examination of the stars and constellations that fill the night sky in summer through Sept. 22. Views of the autumn sky at night will begin on Oct. 6.
The second show, scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m., will be followed by a telescope viewing of that night’s sky. The second show topics are:
- Sept. 8 -- "The Voyager Encounters," in which recorded narrator Patrick Stewart shares the results of Voyager 1 and 2's visits to our solar system’s outer planets and their moons.
- Sept. 22 -- The topic of the show is pending.
- Oct. 6 -- "Astronomy in the Ancient Mediterranean: Chasing the Total Solar Eclipse of March 29, 2006" will explore the culture and history of Malta, Egyptian astronomy and lore, science in the Greco-Roman period, the decline of astronomical knowledge during the Middle Ages, the preservation of Greek wisdom in Islamic culture and the rediscovery of classical knowledge during the Renaissance. The program will conclude with highlights of the total solar eclipse as seen from Tobruk, Lybia, and a preview of upcoming eclipse events, including the transit of Mercury on Nov. 8, 2006--visible in its entirety from Southern California.
- Oct. 20 -- "The Search for Life in the Universe," in which recorded narrator Leonard Nimoy poses the question, "Are we alone in the universe?" The show explores attempts by humans to establish contact with extraterrestrial civilizations.
Student admission for the planetarium shows is $3 for one show and $5 for both. General admission is $5 for one show and $8 for both. Tickets are available at the University Student Union box office Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by calling the box office at (818) 677-2488.
