CSUN to Hold 'Boot Camp' for Speech-Language Pathology Students
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif. Aug. 15, 2006) -- Cal State Northridge’s Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences is holding its second annual "Clinical Boot Camp" for those interested in a career in speech-language pathology.
The camp, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 and 29, is designed for students in the clinical phase of the Speech-Language Pathology program. The two-day event will be held in Monterey Hall, located on the east side of campus near the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Nordhoff Street.
"Students have an incredible amount of academic conceptual knowledge but don’t always know how to transfer that to the bedside," said Janice Woolsey, clinic coordinator of CSUN’s Language, Speech and Hearing Center. "Boot camp is meant to bridge the gap between academics and clinical case work. What makes boot camp stand apart from the classroom is that it is completely hands-on."
The camp will explore both pediatric and adult language disorders. Some topics that will be discussed are: childhood apraxia of speech, the "whole body" approach to voice treatment, how to conduct bedside swallowing evaluations and a workshop on the treatment of patients with tracheostomies and ventilators.
Among the speech-language pathologists scheduled to present are: Norma Olvera, a bilingual pathologist at Glendale Adventist Medical Center; Lisa Usher, a representative of Super Duper Publications, a provider of educational material; Marianne Stone Smith, a specialist in infant and toddler speech-language pathology; Tracy Coleite, a medical speech pathologist for Kaiser Permanente; Lisa Torres, a clinical specialist with Passy-Muir Inc. and a member of the Medical Speech Pathology Council of California; and Joanna Cazden, a speech-language pathologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The camp is free and all supplies, prizes and lunch have been donated by companies and individuals in the field.
Registration is required and should be done by Friday, Aug. 18. To register, call (818) 677-2856 or e-mail LSHC@csun.edu.
The Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences at Cal State Northridge has a three-dimensional mission of teaching, research and service for the advancement of human potential in speech, language and hearing.
