CSUN Police, DMV Crack Down on Misuse
of Disabled Persons' Parking Placards
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., June 3, 2005) -- Cal State Northridge's Police Department teamed up with investigators from California's Department of Motor Vehicles last month to crack down on the fraudulent use of parking placards designated for disabled people.
The undercover operation led to the seizure of 25 placards and 25 misdemeanor citations for people who fraudulently obtained and then illegally used Disabled Person Parking Placards to park for free in spaces or lots designated for disabled people.
A similar investigation conducted in April resulted in 24 placards being seized and 24 misdemeanor citations being issued.
In most cases, the misused placards belonged to family or friends of the violators and were being used without their owners' knowledge. In two cases, the violators could not explain how they obtained the cards.
Cal State Northridge is known internationally for the accommodations it makes for its disabled students. There are more than 1,050 students with disabilities attending the university.
