CSUN to Host Fourth Annual 'Young Engineers Day'

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 14, 2006) -- Cal State Northridge chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) will hold its 4th annual "Young Engineers Day" on Friday, April 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is expected to attract more than 100 high school students from throughout the San Fernando Valley. Birmingham, Sylmar, San Fernando and Polytechnic high schools will be participating.

Students will be given a tour of the CSUN engineering facilities, and hear from Northridge alumni and industry professionals. The students will also be shown ongoing engineering projects such as an SAE Formula One racing car and robots. Concluding the day will be a mousetrap racecar competition in which students will build a vehicle solely propelled on the energy emitted by a mousetrap.

"This event is designed to interest minorities and women," said Gevork Mkrtchyan, CSUN ASME vice president. "However, all students in the targeted high schools can use the event to familiarize themselves with college, and specifically engineering."

Most of the events will take place on the university's Jacaranda Hall courtyard, located near the center of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St in Northridge. For more information about the event, please e-mail asme_csun@yahoo.com.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science at Northridge is home to several nationally recognized programs where students gain valuable hands-on experience working alongside faculty members and industry professionals on cutting-edge research. Most recently, the college is celebrating a $20 million renovation of its facilities, which feature 50 state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories that offer hands-on experience.
