CSUN to Host “Take Back the Night” Rally Against Sexual Violence
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif. March 2, 2006) – The Violent Acts Grounded student organization and the Department of Women’s Studies at Cal State Northridge will host the third annual “Take Back the Night” rally against sexual assault, rape and domestic violence on Thursday, March 9.
Open to students and the community, the rally will feature assault survivor Barbara Gage, Peggy Reyna from the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women, CSUN’s Women’s Studies chair, Marta Lopez-Garza and members of the Date/Acquaintance Rape Prevention Project, a program available through CSUN University Counseling Services.
Self-defense demonstrations will be provided by the university’s Rape, Aggression, Defense Program. Counseling also will be available by volunteer counselors from the Valley Trauma Center of the San Fernando Valley.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. between Buildings 8 and 11 of the University Park Apartments located off of Zelzah Avenue, south of Lassen Street, in Northridge.
A candlelight vigil and march will follow the rally. Marchers will walk from the apartments to CSUN’s Women’s Center located on the corner of Plummer Street and Darby Avenue. The event will conclude at the Women’s Center with an open microphone from about 7:30-10 p.m. for any attendee who wishes to share their story.
