The regional award for excellence was given for a compilation of work by KCSN's news team, which is made up of only one full-time employee, news director Keith Goldstein, and students majoring in broadcast journalism. The winning entry included a broadcast of the "Evening Update" and reports on such topics as the opening of the Orange Line busway in the San Fernando Valley and Army recruiting on high school campuses.

In addition to the award for overall excellence, senior Mystie Heckler won a Murrow Award for best hard news feature reporting for her story "Releasing Jail Inmates."

Senior Edward Jacob won a Murrow Award for best use of sound in his story "Altered States Art Exhibit."

These recent honors by the Radio and Television News Directors Association bring to 19 the total number of Edward R. Murrow Awards won by KCSN and its staff over the years.
