CSUN Library to Celebrate Mozart with Exhibit, Performance

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 19, 2006) -- Cal State Northridge's Oviatt Library will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with an exhibition of materials related to the composer and the period in which he worked as well as a special performance of two of his works on Wednesday, May 3.

CSUN's Samuel L. Goldberg and Sons Honors String Quartet will perform Mozart's Quartet in D minor, K. 421--Allegro Moderato and Menuetto movements, and the Serenade in G Major, K. 525--Allegro and Rondo movements, at noon in the Music and Media wing of the Oviatt Library.

That week, beginning on May 1, the library will feature displays in the Music and Media wing of Mozart materials and 18th century costumes, and offer daily video showings of Mozart biographies, symphonies and operas including "Amadeus," "Le Nozze di Figaro," "Cosi Fan Tutte" and "La Clemenza di Tito."

"We are celebrating the contributions of someone who is considered one of the greatest composers while at the same time hoping to raise awareness of music and the library's fine collection of music materials, including Mozart materials," said music and media librarian Antonio Calvo.

Both the exhibit and the performance are free and open to the public. For more information, call the Oviatt Library's music and media library at (818) 677-2211.

The Oviatt Library is home to more than 1.25 million volumes, 3 million microfilms, 125,000 government publications, and subscribes to more than 2,400 periodicals and more than 20,000 electronic databases, journals and books. It also has an extensive historical collection of mixed media, rare books and archives. It serves as the main research facility in the San Fernando Valley.
