CSUN Invites Public to Celebrate Iranian New Year

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 16, 2006) — The Iranian Student Association will host its third annual Iranian New Year Festival on Wednesday, March 22.

Open to the public, this event will feature Iranian music, dancers, a cultural fashion show and Persian food, available for $5 a plate.

A traditional Iranian new year’s table will also be present. An integral part of the celebration, the table will display seven items, each of which represents a good omen for the new year.

“The start of spring signifies the Iranian new year. Welcoming in the new year is a very important tradition for Iranians, a tradition originally started in the Persian Empire 2500 years ago,” said Safa Sajadi, founding president of the Iranian Student Association.

“Rooted in the Zoroastrian faith, the celebration of the new year is not a religious event but a cultural one, embraced by all Iranians regardless of faith or national origin,” said Sajadi.

“We wish to inform the campus and the community about the New Year, the Iranian culture and most importantly, the Iranian people,” she said.

The event will take place from 12-3 p.m. on the Bookstore lawn, on the south side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

For more information, contact Sajadi at (818) 677-2477.
