Screening of Documentary “Almost Home” to be shown at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif. April 28, 2006) — Cal State Northridge’s Interdisciplinary Gerontology Program, along with the Alzheimer’s Association Regional Office at CSUN, invites the community to attend a free screening of “Almost Home: Changing Aging in America” on Tues., May 2, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

“Almost Home” is a feature-length, cinema verité documentary chronicling a year of transformations at Saint John’s, a retirement community comprised of independent and assisted living individuals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The film will be shown in the Presentation Room of the university’s Oviatt Library, located in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

“The true-life drama in ‘Almost Home’ elicits important issues such as: coping with disability and dementia, adapting to how aging changes relationships, negotiating caregiving responsibilities, preparing for the end of life, the economics of nursing home care, the difficulty of surviving on nursing assistant wages and the challenge of changing nursing homes,” said Debra Sheets, R.N. and coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Gerontology Program.

As the 76 million strong Baby Boomer generation begins to turn 60 this year, 50 percent of Americans will have to deal with either their own aging or that of a loved one, making “Almost Home” a timely and relevant documentary, its makers said.

Rather than ignoring this growing concern, “the visionaries behind this ‘culture-change’ revolution seek to tear down traditional walls between residents, staff, and families and to replace the stigma of nursing homes as institutions of boredom and despair with a vision of ‘community’ where people live rich and full lives,” said Sheets.

Directed by documentary film maker Brad Lichtenstein, “Almost Home” is a co-production of 371 productions and Wisconsin Public Television.

Parking is $4 and located in Lot B4 on the corner of Darby Avenue and Vincennes Street. For more information visit the film’s Web site at www.almosthomedoc.com or contact Sheets at (818) 677-2344.
