CSUN to Present Film Screening and Discussion on Child Labor
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Mar. 29, 2006) -- Cal State Northridge invites the public to a special film screening and panel discussion about the increasing worldwide problem of child labor.
"Child Labor and Reaching Out to Make a Difference," will be held on Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in the Northridge Center, at the University Student Union on the east side of campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
This free event is sponsored by CSUN's Department of Child and Adolescent Development and organized by child and adolescent professor, Carol Kelly and graduate student Marta Gonzalez.
The event will include a screening of the documentary, "Stolen Childhoods," directed by Len Morris and Robin Romano. The film is the first feature documentary on global child labor. The film is narrated by Meryl Streep. Break-out, advocacy group sessions will follow the screening.
"Very few people are informed about this serious problem," Kelly said. "This affects everybody. CSUN is in a strategic position to inform the public about child labor issues."
A panel discussion will be led by Morris and will include CSUN's family and consumer sciences professor Scott Plunkett, and International Labor Rights Fund (ILRF) founder and consultant Pharis Harvey.
"We need to discover all aspects of the child labor issue," Kelly said. "With the discussion and film screening, we hope to tackle the political, economic, and familial dimensions of this issue as well as bring about solutions and advocacy."
According to ILRF statistics, an estimated 250 million children from the ages of five to 14 are working around the world.
