CSUN to Celebrate Different Cultures With 'Carnaval'
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 11, 2006) -- The University Student Union at Cal State Northridge is set to launch its eighth annual Carnaval, a three-day event that showcases the numerous diverse cultures of CSUN.
The event is set to begin on Monday, April 17 and will run through Wednesday, April 19. Brazilian and Korean dancers, a Masquerade Ball, craft corners, different types of food and music, and a casino/karaoke night are scheduled to be part of the festivities.
"What we do at this event is to provide an avenue for students and the community to learn about different cultures through music, food, entertainment, and activities," said Carol Desgroppes-Brown, program coordinator for the USU.
All events and activities of Carnaval are free and open to the public.
A documentary on diversity will be shown on Monday, April 17, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the USU theater. On Tuesday, April 18, from 8 p.m. to midnight, a Masquerade Ball will take place in the university's Pub Sports Grill. Carnaval will conclude with a Capoeira demonstration, along with Filipino and Korean dance performances, from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19. During that evening, a "casino extravaganza" with a concert showcasing the band "Slow Car Crash", and karaoke will take place until 10 p.m. in the university's Satellite Student Union complex.
