CSUN to Host "Caregiver Wellness Day 2006"

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 7, 2006) — The Gerontology Program at Cal State Northridge, in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association of Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties’ Greater San Fernando Valley Regional Office, presents the 5th annual “This Day’s for You” Caregiver Wellness Day from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 22.

Through education, relaxation, renewal and support, the event seeks to rejuvenate those that spend their time caring for others.

The event will be held in the University Student Union’s Grand Salon, located on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

“The purpose of the event is to provide respite and pampering for a day to caregivers,” said event coordinator Arturo Montenegro, manager of the San Fernando Valley Regional Office.

Featured speakers will include: Dr. Dan Osterweil, medical director of S+AGE at Sherman Oaks Hospital, who will give an update on research and the treatment of dementia; Brenda Avadian, creator of TheCaregiversVoice.com, speaking on “LIFE with Alzheimer’s: Finding the JOY in Caregiving;” and Lori Michiel and Donna Pick, of Accent on Seniors and Senior Residential Choices, discussing “New Beginnings: How to Make the Right Decisions for Senior Living.”

In addition to line dancing with country singer Annelle Travis, coordinators plan a drum circle and sign-up sessions for support groups, relaxation through guided imagery and massages.

A $12 pre-registration fee for the event is required, as seating is limited. Reservations should be made by April 17.  The fee will include all sessions, resource materials, continental breakfast and lunch. Registration forms are available online at www.alzla.org.

Parking is $4 and available in Lot G4, on the corner of Zelzah Avenue and Prairie Street.

For caregivers who wish to attend the event, there will be a limited amount of in-home care provided for their clients. For more details, contact Sandra Nelson of Vitas at (818) 456-2642.

For more information, contact Montenegro at (818) 677-4404.
