Police Undercover Operation Nets Arrest of Vehicle Burglary Suspect
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 4, 2006) - Cal State Northridge police have
arrested a suspect in connection with a rash of motor vehicle
burglaries that have hit the campus during the past month.
Anthony Negreary, 22, of Northridge was arrested March 29 during an
undercover operation by CSUN police officers. He was booked at
the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Division for burglary
from a motor vehicle. As a result, the District Attorney's Office
has charged Negreary with four felony counts of burglary.
A search of Negreary's vehicle yielded burglary tools, property and
illegal drugs. Negreary, who is not a CSUN student, gave officers
consent to search his residence, and they found additional stolen
property from past CSUN burglaries.
The CSUN undercover operation came in response to more than 25 motor
vehicle burglaries that have been reported in university parking lots
and parking structures in recent weeks.
"This problem has occupied us for more than a month," said CSUN Police
Chief Anne Glavin. "Our officers have been frustrated with the
frequency of the break-ins. But this undercover apprehension
solves several cases and makes a dent in solving the broader problem."
During their investigation, CSUN detectives linked Negreary to at least
four vehicle burglaries on campus and believe he is connected to
others. CSUN detectives are working closely with LAPD detectives to clear similar, unsolved cases.
Said CSUN Operations Capt. Scott VanScoy, "The number of CSUN
police personnel, both sworn and non-sworn, involved in addressing this
problem is indicative of a great tactical operation. Teamwork was
the key."
