Opera Star Angela M. Brown to Give Rare Musical Performance at CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., March 22, 2006) -- The Metropolitan Opera's newest star, Angela M. Brown, will give a rare performance of opera, spiritual and gospel music at Cal State Northridge's Performing Arts Center on Sunday, March 26.

The show is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the north side of the University Student Union's Plaza del Sol, located on the east side of the campus off Zelzah Avenue.

Brown will be joined by The Met's baritone Gregg Baker, accompanist William Vendice of the Los Angeles Opera and The Up Choir and Band from the Understanding Principles for Better Living Church, founded by the Rev. Della Reese-Lett.

Brown made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Verdi's "Aïda" in the fall of 2004. The morning following her performance, a reviewer for The New York Times proclaimed "At last an Aïda…" The review went on to say that her performance was "a major event."

When she reprised the role last year for the Opera Company of Philadelphia, a reviewer with the Associated Press said "At this still-early stage of her career, she combines a potent, dusky lower register with a striking ability to spin out soft high notes of shimmering beauty."

The March 26 appearance at CSUN will be Brown's first performance in California since her Met debut and marks her Los Angeles debut.

Her CSUN performance will include a program of opera classics and the music from George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," which will include duets with Baker. Brown, who began her career as a spiritual and gospel music singer, will also perform a selection of spirituals from her highly acclaimed CD, Mosaic, and gospel music.

Ticket prices range from $32.50 for Main Orchestra and $25 for Rear Orchestra. There also are student, faculty and staff ticks available for $15 each with proper ID (limit two per person).

Parking is on Lot G-4 and permits can be purchased for $4 from the parking information booth located in the northwest corner of the lot.

All regular priced single tickets can be purchased by calling the Associated Students Ticket Office at (818) 677-2488 or logging on to www.ArtsNorthridge.csun.edu.
