CSUN Artist to Display Armenian Genocide Exhibit

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 10, 2006) -- An exhibit about the Armenian Genocide by Cal State Northridge graduate student and masters of fine arts candidate Lavon Parian is being featured in Los Angeles' City Hall throughout the month of April.

Iwitness is on display on the 8th floor of Los Angeles City Hall, 200 North Main St., Los Angeles.

"The project is a visual and oral history documentation of survivors of the Armenian Genocide," said Parian. "The project came about when I met photographer Ara Oshagan and we decided to work on a collaboration to photograph…and interview survivors to get their eyewitness accounts of what happened in 1915."

Iwitness not only presents the photos and eyewitness accounts of survivors but also accounts by American, British, and Austrian officials, said Parian.

The exhibit also features a teacher workshop which includes elements from iwitness. The exhibit is expected to educate more than 300 LAUSD teachers about the genocide. Sponsoring the workshop is "The Genocide Education Project," a non-profit organization that assists educators in teaching about human rights and genocide. It is providing instructional materials and other teaching resources for the educational workshops.

"Our goal is to inform teachers about how to educate students about this horrific event, which has impacted the lives of so many people," Parian said. "This exhibit has also had a major impact on influencing the recognition of the genocide."

The exhibit is free and open to the public during city hall office hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The ten-year work of Parian and Oshagan has been shown throughout the country including the Senate rotunda in Washington D.C., the Texas state capitol building, San Francisco's City Hall, and California's capitol building in Sacramento. This is the second time the exhibit has come to Los Angeles. The last time was in 1997.
