CSUN Event to Draw "Circle of Hope" Around Efforts to Protect Children
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., April 25, 2006) — Every time your child logs onto the Internet, hundreds of millions of people, including child predators, have direct access to communicate with your child. To whom is your child talking to? Do you know?
Cal State Northridge is hosting a seminar on Saturday, May 6, focusing on ways to keep your child safe. The eighth annual "Circle of Hope" will take place from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center of the University Student Union, on the east side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
"The national incidence of children harmed or injured by abuse or neglect has more than doubled in the last two decades. Internet predators are targeting children in unprecedented numbers. We must respond now to this growing threat to the most vulnerable members of our society," said Kathleen Van Antwerp, a CSUN child development lecturer and coordinator of the event.
The event will include presentations on identifying abuse as well as the rights and responsibilities of those who care for children and report abuse.
FBI Special Agent Mike McAndrew of the New York City Crimes Against Children Division will present the most current information about keeping children safe on the Internet. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask McAndrew questions.
Award-winning singer/songwriter Paul Manousos will also perform "It’s Gonna Be Alright" and other critically acclaimed songs.
Seating for the seminar is limited. To make a reservation, e-mail onecircle@adelphia.net. Tickets are $15 for those seeking a professional growth certificate, $10 for non-students, $5 for students. Due to the nature of the topic, no children under the age of 17 will be admitted. The event will be interpreted for the deaf.
