CSUN Police Officers will be Targeting
Seat Belt Violators in May, June

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 3, 2005) -- Cal State Northridge's police officers are warning drivers and their passengers that they will be issuing tickets to people not wearing their seat belts as part of a national "Click it or Ticket" campaign from May 16 through June 5.

Officers will be writing tickets, but CSUN Police Chief Anne P. Glavin said the main goal of this special enforcement period is to make drivers and passengers aware of the seat belt law and the role it plays in saving lives and preventing injuries. She pointed out that in 2002, 1,343 vehicle occupants were killed in California crashes.

"Our aim in this campaign is to impact those individuals who still are not in compliance with the law and who do not see the value of seat belts. If tougher enforcement is what is needed, then we hope this effort will change some decision making," Glavin said.

In California, the maximum fine for not wearing a seat belt for persons 16 and older is $89 for the first offence, and $191 for a second offense. A maximum fine of $340 for first-time offenders and $871 for a second offense is imposed on drivers who are cited for improperly securing children under the age of 16.

According to a 2004 California Seat Belt Use survey, 90.4 percent of all vehicle occupants in the state wear their seat belts. Glavin said the campaign is targeting the remaining estimated 3 million people who do not buckle up on California's roadways.
