CSUN's January Planetarium Show Explores the Winter Sky

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Jan. 5, 2005) -- The mysteries of a winter sky will be explored during the January offerings of Cal State Northridge's Bianchi Planetarium.

The planetarium offers two shows every Friday night to give the public an opportunity to view different aspects of the evening skies. The first show, each Friday in January from 6 to 7 p.m., is an examination of the night sky during the winter. The second presentations, each beginning at 7 p.m., are as follows:

  • Jan. 7 -- "Cassini at Saturn: Huygens at Titan" provides a chance for the public to get an update on the Cassini mission to Saturn from Bianchi Planetarium Director Stephen Walton.

  • Jan. 14 -- "Deep Sky Objects of the Winter Sky" is a mostly pictorial show that highlights not only stars and constellations of wintertime, but many deep sky objects such as binary stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.

  • Jan. 21 -- "Mount Wilson Observatory: Then and Now" will mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the observatory with a presentation by Don Nicholson, president of the Mount Wilson Observatory Association, who will talk about the observatory's past and future.

  • Jan. 28 -- "The Perils of Living in Space: An Introduction to Space Weather," in which UCLA space physics professor Mark Moldwin discusses what is being learned about space weather's impact on Earth and plans for space exploration.
Student admission for planetarium shows is $3 for one show and $5 for both shows. General admission is $5 for one show and $8 for both shows.

Tickets are available at the University Student Union box office Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or by calling the box office at (818) 677-2488.
