Cal State Northridge Named Among Top 10 Universities in
Awarding Bachelor's Degrees to Hispanic Students
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 13, 2005) -- Cal State Northridge ranks among the nation's top 10 universities for awarding bachelor's degrees to Hispanic students, according to Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education.
The magazine's annual ranking of the "Top 100" institutions for Hispanics, based on degrees awarded to Latinos, appears in its May 9 issue.
"Cal State Northridge's mission is to serve the people of the greater Los Angeles area, and the diversity of our university reflects the diversity of this region. We are grateful that our efforts to provide an excellent education to all are being recognized," said Northridge President Jolene Koester.
Hispanic Outlook based its rankings on information made available by the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics for the academic year 2003-2004.
The magazine noted that of the 4,944 bachelor's degrees CSUN awarded that year, 23 percent went to Hispanic students.
According to the magazine's rankings, Cal State Northridge was second in the nation for awarding bachelor's degrees to Hispanics in Hispanic studies; fourth in psychology and home economics; fifth in social services; sixth in area studies, visual and performing arts and communications; eighth in English literature; and ninth in business and marketing.
California State University, Northridge has 31,000 full- and part-time students and offers 61 bachelor's and 42 master's degrees as well as 28 education credential programs. Founded in 1958, it is among the largest single-campus universities in the nation and the only four-year public university in the San Fernando Valley. The university serves as the intellectual, economic and cultural heart of the Valley and beyond.
