CSUN Students Invite Public to Discussion
on Role of Bloggers in Media
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., May 5, 2004) -- Cal State Northridge's student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) invites the public to join media legal experts and CSUN faculty for an interactive panel discussion addressing bloggers' rights and role within the media.
As part of the annual Kenneth S. Devol First Amendment Freedom Forum, the discussion, entitled "Battle in the Blogosphere: Bloggers, Reporters and the Future of Journalism" will be held Tuesday, May 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Oviatt Library Room 25, on the garden level of the building.
Guest speakers Kurt Opsahl, representative from Electronic Frontier Foundation; John Kostrey, communication law attorney at Davis Wright Treamain; and Peter Scheer, of the California First Amendment Coalition also will tackle First Amendment issues, shield laws and other issues that arise when journalist gather and report the news.
"The goal of this event is to help students understand the important role that the First Amendment plays in this society," said Sam Richard, SPJ president. "The community can learn the importance of the First Amendment and also the role journalists and bloggers play into their lives in providing them vital information."
"These issues need to be addressed because there are different types of First Amendment issues in our society that change throughout time," Richard said. "As the issues continue to evolve, it's essential to know the most current issues about our first amendment."
The event is free and open to the public. T-shirts from the American Democracy Project will be given to the first 40 attendees. Refreshments will be provided.
Prior to the discussion, a four-part documentary called "Reporters at War" will screen at 1 p.m. in Manzanita Hall, room 212, located at the southwest corner of campus.
CSUN is located at 18111 Nordhoff Street in Northridge. The Oviatt Library is located at the center of campus. Event parking is $4 in lot B5, off the corner of Plummer Street and Etiwanda Avenue.
