(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 6, 2007) — Trees are a sign of growth and prosperity. They are the most dominant and long-lasting feature in the urban landscape. For these reasons, tree selection has become a significant and long-lasting decision for the average homeowner.
Cal State Northridge’s CSUN-al Gardening class is offering a walking tour through the university’s Botanic Garden on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 - 10:30 a.m. The purpose of the class is to teach proper tree selection while also determining their environmental significance.
"Choosing the right tree for the home gives decades of enjoyment while avoiding the maintenance nightmare of the wrong tree in the wrong location," said Brenda Kano, manager of CSUN’s Botanic Garden.
Environmental horticulturist Don Hodel will lead the tour of notable CSUN campus trees and will discuss their suitability for residential landscaping.
While the class is free, registration is required due to limited seating. To register, e-mail botanicgarden@csun.edu or call (818) 677-3496. Driving and parking instructions as well as classroom location will be sent upon registration.
The class will take place rain or shine. Participants are advised to wear appropriate attire and bring sufficient drinking water.
The Cal State Northridge Botanic Garden is operated by the university’s Department of Biology and serves as a field site for botany, entomology, photography, painting and other classes. In addition to outdoor landscapes and natural botanic environments, the garden also features a greenhouse where rare and unusual plants are grown. The garden is open to the community.
