President of the International Council of Sport Science to Speak at CSUN
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., October 5, 2005) -- With childhood obesity, diabetes, and heart disease on the rise, the demand for physical education especially in America’s schools is on the rise as well.
Gudrun Doll-Tepper, president of the International Council of Sports Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) will be addressing this issue along with the role of sports to enhance society on Tuesday Oct. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Nobbs Auditorium in Sequoia Hall, located on the east side of campus, 18111 Nordhoff St, in Northridge.
The presentation coincides with a United Nations declaration proclaiming 2005 as the “Year of Sport and Physical Education,” an initiative designed to address the use of sports to enhance society-from its role in developing countries to its use in corporate team building.
“The United Nations recognizes that sports and physical education are integration forces within communities,” said Carole Oglesby, chair of CSUN’s Department of Kinesiology. “Especially in the developing world, sports is uplifting to people.”
Doll-Tepper will also talk with kinesiology faculty and staff members and tour CSUN’s Center of Achievement for Adapted Physical Activity and the Abbott and Linda Brown Western Center for Adaptive Aquatic Therapy.
“She is widely regarded as the prominent authority in the sports science and physical educational community,” said Oglesby. “She will be addressing topics that deal with the ICSSPE’s involvement on projects in every continent, and in particular the developing world.”
Doll-Tepper was elected president of the organization in 1997. She organized the European Championships of Wheelchair Basketball in 1993. She holds a sport science professorship at the Free University of Berlin, a guest professorship in the Beijing Sport University in China and is a member of the German National Olympic Committee.
