Cal State Northridge Celebrates America Recycles Day
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 7, 2005) -- Cal State Northridge's Associated Students, Inc., is inviting the community to celebrate "America Recycles Day" on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 14 and 15 at the university.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days, at CSUN's University Student Union located on the west side of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge.
The celebration is aimed at educating the community on recycling programs, buying recycled products and increasing recycling efforts at home, said Cyndi Signett, Associated Students Recycling Coordinator.
"Our goal is to get people to take a pledge to recycle on a more regular basis," Signett said. "This is a national campaign. We want people to buy and use recycled content products. We want to educate the CSUN community, and the community at-large on the benefits of recycling."
According to statistics from the America Recycles Day web site, more than 28 percent of America's waste is now recycled. This is a rate that has doubled in the past 15 years.
America Recycles Day is a national, all-volunteer, and non-profit organization which began in 1997. The ARD organization has helped promote curbside collection programs and generate awareness of the social, environmental, and economic benefits of recycling.
CSUN's recycling program began in 1991 as a cooperative effort between Associated Students and the university's administration. The program was established to divert recyclable materials from the university's waste system and to promote the benefits of recycling.
