CSUN Chicano Studies Pioneers to be Honored
for Their Contributions to Student Empowerment

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 28, 2005) -- Chicano studies pioneers Rodolfo Acuña and Raul Ruiz, both professors at Cal State Northridge, will be honored Saturday, Oct. 1, for their contributions to the empowerment of students at a conference of community college students at the university.

The University of California's Puente Program will recognize both men with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual Puente Transfer Motivational Conference, which is designed to encourage community college students to go on to four-year institutions and complete their educations.

Acuña and Ruiz were selected for this honor based on their contributions to student empowerment efforts and their literary achievements. Acuņa will receive his award during a ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on the Oviatt Library Lawn in the center of the campus at 18111 Nordhoff St. in Northridge. Ruiz will receive his award at 3:30 p.m., also during a ceremony on the Oviatt Library Lawn.

The conference, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the Oviatt Library Lawn and in Sierra Hall, also features workshops on such subjects as academic success in math and science, avoiding the pitfalls of transitioning to a four-year institution, understanding and selecting the right option in the major of their choice, and financial aid.

A highlight of the conference will be a presentation by award-winning writer Luis Rodriguez, author of "Always Running," at 1 p.m.

For more information, contact Josefina E. Canchola at (714) 357-7728 or (909) 396-5472.

The Puente Program--"puente" means "bridge" in Spanish--is a nationally recognized program that helps prepare educationally underserved students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities, earn degrees and return to the community as leaders and mentors to future generations. It is sponsored by the University of California and participating community colleges.
