Constitution Day Celebration Coming to CSUN

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Sept. 7, 2005) -- Cal State Northridge’s Roland Tseng College of Extended Learning invites the public to learn more about the U.S. Constitution during a celebration of the historic document on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the campus’ Sierra Center.

Constitution Day will consist of a moderated panel discussion on constitutional law, rights and liberties, and the impact of major Supreme Court decisions on Americans.

Panelists will include CSUN political science professors Sylvia Snowiss, Christopher Shortell, and journalism professor Maureen Rubin.

“I hope that people come out of the event with a notion of how the Constitution affects our laws,” said Marcella Tyler, public relations director for the Roland Tseng Collge of Extended Learning.

On Sept. 17, 1787, delegates at the Philadelphia Convention completed and signed the U.S. Constitution. The Constitution was not ratified until 1788.

In 2004, U.S. Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia created a federal law designating Sept. 17 as Constitution Day, requiring schools that receive federal funding and federal agencies hold educational programs regarding the Constitution.

The event is free and a light breakfast will be served. Those planning on attending must RSVP to the College of Extended Learning at 818-677-7131 by Friday, Sept. 9.
