CSUN Students Experience Education in Different Countries

(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 9, 2005) -- Twenty-seven Cal State Northridge students are receiving an education beyond what any book, test, or lecture can ever give.

The CSUN students this year are among dozens of California State University (CSU) students who are studying abroad through the system-wide International Program (IP). IP offers students an opportunity to study at one of more than 50 universities in 19 countries while receiving college credit.

Students are interested in studying abroad because they want to experience a different culture and atmosphere while still learning in their academic field, said Marta Lopez, advisor of CSUN's International Program.

Lopez said, a big misconception about studying abroad is the cost factor. She said, many students are often hesitant in applying because they feel the costs are overbearing.

"Sometimes it is cheaper to study abroad than it is to physically study on campus," Lopez said. "Many people don't realize that you pay normal state university fees, most financial aid transfers over, plus you're receiving credit for courses, and you're in a different country."

The most frequented locations for students to study are Spain, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. For the 2006-2007 academic year, IP will be expanding study abroad programs to Africa.

"For the first time, we will be expanding to three campuses in Africa. The locations will be the University of Ghana, the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa and the KwaZulu-natal University also in South Africa," Lopez said.

CSUN students studying abroad for the 2005-2006 academic year are:
