CSUN's Public Safety Dept. to Launch 9-1-1 Information Campaign
(NORTHRIDGE, Calif., Nov. 17, 2005) -- As part of a continuing effort to educate the Cal State Northridge community about how to contact university police during an emergency, CSUN's Department of Public Safety is launching a 9-1-1 information campaign next week.
Beginning Nov. 21, university police officers will be visiting campus departments distributing posters and phone stickers to staff and faculty members as part of the campaign.
"Surprisingly, it is not always obvious to everyone on campus how to reach us in an emergency," said CSUN Police Chief Anne Glavin, director of public safety. "This is critical information that we want everyone to know. The personal safety of everyone on campus is our primary concern and responsibility."
The first 9-1-1 campaign was implemented in March 2003 shortly after enhancements were made to the campus telephone system that eliminated the need to dial a "9" before calling university police. Users usually have to dial "9" on the university's telephone system to reach an outside line.
The campaign also will serve as a reminder that the campus' emergency blue light phones, elevator phones or TTY-enabled call boxes can be used to contact university police during an emergency.
While members of the campus community sometimes dial the Department of Public Safety's business number, (818) 677-2111, during an emergency, Glavin noted that they would get a faster response by dialing 9-1-1, the universally known emergency number.
