Today, as we return to our offices and classrooms, I want to encourage the campus community to come together and reflect calmly and rationally on yesterday's events.

This tragedy has created uncertainty and anxiety. Although these feelings are normal and natural, let us focus on providing our most heartfelt support and sympathy to all those who have suffered loss, both across the nation and here in our community.

I understand that there may be members of the campus community who have family members and friends directly affected by this tragedy. These people, in particular, will need our care and attention in the weeks and months ahead. Please join me in providing any necessary assistance as we move forward through this time of sorrow.

As the appropriate government agencies respond to these events, it may be some time before all the facts are fully known. We are a university community that has a commitment to respect for all people, and I am confident that we will maintain this commitment in the days and weeks to come.

I have asked University Counseling Services to offer individual and group support/counseling sessions for those who may wish to participate. We will announce other campus activities and events as information is available.
