Important News Regarding Student Affairs

January 5, 2010

To the Campus Community:

It is with deep concern that I write at the beginning of this new year to inform you that Dr. Terry Piper has requested a temporary leave from his responsibilities as Vice President for Student Affairs in order to devote his full attention and energies to medical treatment for melanoma, a type of skin cancer, which he has learned has spread.

I am sure you will join me in supporting Vice President Piper’s desire to focus on his health and the needs of his family during this challenging time. Our prayers and good thoughts are with Vice President Piper and his family during this most difficult period.

During the period of Vice President Piper’s treatment and recuperation, Dr. William Watkins has agreed to serve as Acting Vice President for Student Affairs. I have formally appointed him to serve in this role and he assumes the responsibilities immediately. Vice President Piper will remain available for consultation, both to Dr. Watkins and to other members of the President’s Cabinet.

Though Vice President Piper will be greatly missed during this temporary leave, I am grateful that Dr. Watkins stands ready to perform the responsibilities of Acting Vice President. In his current position as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Dr. Watkins has worked closely with Dr. Piper in all aspects of overseeing the Division. Please join me in thanking and supporting Dr. Watkins as he steps in to fulfill the responsibilities of this important position in our University.
