Department Internships

Student Outreach and Recruitment Services is currently looking for bright, dynamic current CSUN students to fill the following positions. If you are interested please download our Department Student Assistant application, fill it out and return it to our main desk in Bayramian Hall, Room 190.

GEAR UP

Position: GEAR UP Student Assistant
Wage: $10 hr.
Hours: 15-20 hours per week (Must be able to work at least four consecutive hours at a time.)


General Information:

Student Assistants will work with students in the Los Angeles Unified School District which includes: Richard E. Byrd Middle School, Roy Romer Middle School, Van Nuys Middle School, and Sun Valley Middle School. Student Assistants will be part of the federally funded GEAR UP grant program designed to significantly increase the number of students who enter into college. The primary focus of the student assistant will be to assist students with the planning and preparation for college and beyond.

Duties:

  • Work with students in a classroom setting, individually, and in small groups to provide assistance with academic and life skills.
  • Tutor students in math or reading using Study Island computer labs.
  • Work with students in academic, leadership or community service clubs.
  • Maintain accurate records of daily contacts and activities with students.
  • Work collaboratively under supervision of on-site project staff.
  • Help supervise field trips and other cultural enrichment experiences sponsored by the school or GEAR UP.
  • Assist GEAR UP staff in preparation for GEAR UP activities and workshops.
  • Work with students on college admission and scholarship applications knowledge.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Must be a current student in good academic standing; person with documented experience working successfully with target age group
  • Reliable, responsible and self-directed
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; bilingual preferred
  • Interest in working with middle school students from diverse cultures
  • Willing to learn methods of effective tutoring
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must be able to attend mandatory, paid trainings, prior to working in the schools, as well as on the-job training.

Educational Talent Search (ETS)

Student Employment Opportunity


Position: ETS Academic Tutor and Pre-College Advisor
Wage: Starting salary is $10 hr.
Hours: Fall/Spring, 12-15 hrs. per week. Prefer students that have 2-3 full days available for work during the week.
Assignment Date: As Soon As Possible


General Information:

Provide academic tutoring and pre-college advisement to middle school and/or high school students participating in the Educational Talent Search program. Educational Talent Search is federally funded TRiO program that seeks to increase the number of first generation and low-income students that successfully enroll in post secondary institutions.

Duties:

Provide pre-college advisement to students in the areas of college awareness, life skills, financial aid, and academic preparedness. Maintain complete and accurate records of pre-college advisement sessions; provide student follow-up and periodic assessments. Attend mandatory training sessions to increase competency in working with students. Assist ETS Advising Coordinators with outreach and recruitment efforts. Serve as a positive role model for ETS students. Perform other duties as assigned to achieve project goals and objectives.

Additional responsibilities may include providing academic tutoring to students in small groups or individual assistance in areas of specific academic need (i.e. English, math, and other core subject areas) for student's grades 6-12. Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and improve academic capabilities in designated areas.

Qualifications:

Prior tutoring or peer advisement experience with students, grades 6-12, in a classroom setting or after school program. Possess a desire to work with first generation, low-income students to increase access to higher education and financial aid opportunities, and academic preparedness. Must be friendly, punctual, professional, proactive, and a quick learner. Minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher in subject matter. Two letters of reference from professors required if selected.

Purpose:

The mission of Educational Talent Search is to equip first generation and low income students and parents with accurate information on post secondary and financial aid opportunities to empower students to attend the college/university of their choice after high school graduation.

UPWARD BOUND/TRiO

Position: Upward Bound Academic Tutor
Salary: $9.10 hour
Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 12-17 hrs. Per week
Assignment Date: As Soon as Possible

Genral Information:

Provide tutoring in areas of specific academic need (i.e. English, math, foreign language and the sciences) for high school students participating in the Upward Bound Program at CSUN. Upward Bound is federally funded TRiO program that seeks to increase the number of first generation and low-income students that successfully enroll in post secondary institutions.

Duties:

  • Provide tutoring to Upward bound participants in small groups or individually.
  • Maintain complete and accurate records of tutoring sessions, provide student follow-up and periodic assessments.
  • Assist in the planning and coordinating of the Saturday Academies and cultural/educational fieldtrips.
  • Attend mandatory training sessions to increase competency in working with students.
  • Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.
  • Provide accurate and precise information of post secondary and financial aid opportunities.
  • Serve as a positive role model for Upward Bound participants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to achieve project goals and objectives.
  • Have reliable transportation and ability to work in the afternoons at selected target schools.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Minimum of sophomore status at a post secondary institution required.
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher in subject matter.
  • Two letters of reference from professors required.
  • Prior tutoring experiences with first generation, low-income middle school students in a classroom setting or after school program a plus.
  • Bilingual skills (English - Spanish) a plus.

Outreach Internship Program

Position: Outreach Internship Program Student Assistant
Salary: $9 hr.
Days/Hours: Work two full days during the week at a minimum of 15 to 20 hours per week.
Start Date: Aug. 27, 2012

General Information:

The Outreach Internship Program (OIP) is designed to support matriculated Cal State Northridge students by providing a mechanism for them to engage in outreach services. The Outreach Internship Program (OIP) has complemented Student Outreach and Recruitment Services for 18 year years by providing peer advisor/mentor services. OIP Students are trained in the areas of pre-admissions consulting, guest relations and marketing and communications with the overarching purpose of increasing access to the CSU and California State University Northridge for high school and community college students in our local area. OIP is designed to provide a meaningful experience in career and self-awareness for current CSUN students while complementing their educational experience.

Duties:

  • Work at local high schools and community colleges.
  • Motivate and provide student’s college and financial aid awareness to students in individual and group settings.
  • Work with students one-on-one or in classroom presentations. 
  • Act as student liaison between area schools and California State University, Northridge (CSUN).
  • Assist college and outreach counselors with outreach and recruitment services.
  • Weekly school visits during school hours.
  • Some occasional evening, weekend activities and university events.
  • Attend bi-monthly staff meetings.
  • Students will be responsible for monthly and end of the year data.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Reliable, responsible and self-directed
  • Experience working with high school or community college students.
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and auto insurance
  • All majors encouraged to apply. Must be at least a junior and have above a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Must be able to attend mandatory meetings, trainings and events.
