Breanne Butler 2007

How does a self proclaimed naïve small town girl from Grants Pass Oregon find herself at California State University Northridge? Breanne wasn't even sure if she wanted to attend college when she was given an opportunity to do some community service teaching small children how to sign Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star in American Sign Language and to teach them a little about the deaf culture. In order to do this she had to learn about it herself. After doing research and learning more about the deaf culture she knew what she wanted to do with her life and that led her to Cal State Northridge where she is now a Deaf Studies major who no longer finds herself naïve but a more confident, open minded individual.

The one piece of advice that Breanne would give to an incoming student is to get involved! For Breanne, moving from Oregon to Southern California, getting involved has helped me to get to know more people and has made CSUN feel like home. It has built her character and who she is today and has created endless networking opportunities.

Since arriving at CSUN, Breanne has immersed herself in the Cal State Northridge community. She is an active member of the University Ambassador program, giving tours to deaf, hearing and hard of hearing prospective students and their families. She is also a member of Alpha Sigma Theta sorority serving in more than six positions including Newsletter Editor and Purchase Agent. She also serves through the Americorps program.

Breanne anticipates graduating in the Fall of 2007 and hopes to pursue a Master's Degree in Academic Counseling. Her goal is to continue working with the deaf community possibly in the area of academic advising.
