GPA

You determine your grade point average as follows:

  • Add total # of units attempted
  • Add total # of grade points received
  • Divide total # of grade points received by total # of units attempted

Note: Courses taken for C/NC do not count in determining your GPA.
The values are as follows:

Project Your GPA:
You can also project your GPA by adding your current units to the total of units attempted and dividing this by the total number of Grade Points Earned (include the grade point for the current semester).  This will give you a projected GPA.
Example:  Student has a current GPA of 1.95 and has a total of 45 units attempted and 105 grade points earned.  Student is currently taking 12 units.  Add the 12 units to the 45 units attempted for a total of 57 units attempted.  Then project what grades you will get in each class.  Let’s say that this student will receive a B (9), C (6), D (3), D (3).  The total grade points will be 21, add this to the current 105 grade for a total of 126.  You then divide 126/57=2.21 GPA.

Readmission to COBAE After One or Two Prior Disqualifications
Students disqualified from CSUN should seek advisement with the College of their intended major at readmission.  For business and economics majors, group advisement is available four times per year.  Call 818-677-3537 to schedule.
How to Qualify – How to Apply for Readmission:
Students with one or two prior disqualifications from CSUN may be eligible for readmission, under Academic Performance Agreement (APA), to the College of Business and Economics when they meet all of the following conditions:

  • Raise CSUN and cumulative (total) grade point averages (GPAs) by a measurable amount PRIOR to readmission.  Improve GPA in upper division major, if taken, as possible.
  • IF the University accepts applications for returning previously disqualified students, submit an application for admission ON-LINE to the University, with fee, during the INITIAL FILING PERIOD for a spring or fall semester.  Please consult the Admissions and Records website, www.csun.edu/a&r, for initial filing periods each semester AND ABILITY TO APPLY.
  • Fill out and submit the questionnaire required for previously disqualified students, available through the A&R website.
  • Submit official transcripts from any other colleges attended since last enrollment at CSUN.
  • Show responsible enrollments with consistent academic success since the last disqualification.  Grades of Incomplete, W, or grades below “C” are not considered to be a demonstration of academic success.
  • Must achieve measurable GPA improvement no later than previous spring for a fall admission cycle; no later than previous summer for a spring admission cycle.
  • A “Conditions for Readmission” plan will outline steps to facilitate readmission.  Completion of Math 103 with a grade of “C” or higher is required.  Additional course, grade and degree requirements may be conditions for readmission.
  • College of Business and Economics and University approval for readmission after disqualification is required.  Not all students will be readmitted.  Not all majors available at readmission.

Methods of Enrollment at CSUN While on Disqualification Status:
Note:  Continuing Education non-matriculated enrollments through the Roland Tseng College of Extended Learning (extension fees) at CSUN are limited to 24 units that can be applied toward the bachelor’s degree.  Summer visiting transitory, Winter, and Fall and Spring Open University are all Continuing Education non-matriculated enrollments.  Posted as “CONT EDUC” on the unofficial CSUN transcript.

  • Summer sessions.  Available first come, first-served.  Register On-line via www.csun.edu/portal.  Visiting non-matriculated registration is part of continuing education unit limits.
  • Winter sessions.  Available first come, first-served.  Register On-line via www.csun.edu/portal.  These are continuing education non-matriculated units.
  • Fall and Spring as Open University enrollments.  These are continuing education non-matriculated units.  Read about Open University through the www.csun.edu/portal website; click on Extension Catalog.  You may also call the College of Extended Learning, 866-873-6439, for more information.

Enrollment at Community Colleges:
Students may complete lower division coursework at a community college.  Please seek advisement with a community college counselor and inquire about General Education Certification.  See www.assist.org for course application to degree requirements.  Courses complete at colleges other than CSUN will contribute toward the total (cumulative) GPA, but does not change the CSUN GPA.
 Important Information:

  • The three outlined methods of enrollment at CSUN will result in grades being posted on your CSUN transcript and will affect your CSUN grade point average (within non-matriculated unit limitations).
  • Courses taken at colleges other than CSUN will only affect your cumulative (total) grade point average.
  • Non-matriculated coursework taken via visiting/transitory summer session, winter session, and Open University fall or spring is considered Continuing Education enrollment (extension).  A maximum of 24 units of Continuing Education from the Tseng College of Extended Learning may be applied toward the bachelor’s degree.  Extension courses numbered 800 do not carry any credit towards CSUN graduation or credential requirements.
  • Please note the University may impose additional conditions for readmission, including completion of General Education Section A and Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam.
  • Students will follow the catalog year for the major requirements in effect at the time of readmission.  Not all majors available at readmission.  Some majors have impaction or other restrictions.
  • Students who receive a third disqualification may reapply to the University after a minimum waiting period of five years. Students must provide evidence that demonstrates acquired skills or achievements that support a successful return to the University. Students reinstated to the University must meet each semester all criteria established by the University for continued enrollment of readmitted previously disqualified students until both their cumulative total GPA and CSUN GPA return to 2.0. Those who fail to do so will receive a final disqualification and will be given no further opportunities for readmission.

Rev 6/2008 JS

Course Repeats and Excess Enrollment

This policy is designed to promote course access for students taking a course for the first time.  This policy is detailed on page 35-36 of the 2006-2008 University Catalog.
Significant portions of this repeat policy are:

  • "A maximum of 15 semester units of CSUN coursework in which a student earned a "C-" or lower grade may be repeated for the purpose of "excluding grades" ("grade forgiveness") from the computation of a student's overall GPA."
  • "On the third or subsequent enrollment in a course, permission of the College's Associate Dean is necessary."

The College of Business and Economics WILL enforce the third or subsequent enrollment policy.  During registration, enrollments will be monitored.  Students found to have enrolled in a course for the third or subsequent time WILL BE dropped from that course.  In order to avoid being dropped, you will need the Associate Dean's permission.  A form to request this permission is available in the Advisement Office (BB 2113) or in the Associate Dean's Office (BB 3109) or at this pdf link.
Permission will be given in cases of serious and compelling reasons.  This requires evidence that conditions have changed such that prior performance in that course will NOT be repeated.  NOTE: Having received a "W" for a course counts as a course enrollment.
