Valuing Diversity 2013-2014

CSUN values diversity as an essential condition for achieving institutional excellence. Our University thrives on the talents drawn from a diverse workforce and believes that a climate of respect and inclusive of all allows employees to perform to their maximum potential.

This year the university created the CSUN Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award, to be presented to an President Harrison & Sarina Leobemployee who exemplifies, through leadership and positive interactions with others, a commitment to the spirit of diversity and a profound respect for all people from different backgrounds, life experiences, learning styles, and points of view within the University community.

1ST ANNUAL DIVERSITY AWARD went to Sarina Loeb, Special Assistant for Diversity issues at the University Student Union. Loeb helped develop and launch the campus’ new Veterans’ Resource Center and Pride Center.

Additionally, we provided training sessions to our campus community as gateways toward inclusion.

These sessions provided participants with ways to engage in diversity discourse, including how to have productive conversations about individual and group differences; how to be responsive to the needs and challenges of traditionally marginalized groups; how to address and reduce bias and how to support the collective and individual talents of our CSUN workforce.

The following describes some of the training we’ve provided in the last year:

• Supporting Employees with Disabilities
• Leadership Forums on both Men’s and Women’s Issues
• Securing Student Success: Addressing the Needs of Veterans and LGTBQ Students
• CSUN Women and their STEM Projects
• Supporting CSUN Employees & Students: Creating Accessible Documents & Presentations
Keynote Address: Building Inclusion at CSUN and Making Diversity a Vehicle for Innovation Big announcements coming through this week and pretty much every day till Christmas! First things first, we had an awesome crowd last night where we fired off two drafts back to back! Thanks to everyone who came down and made a great night out of what would have been a relatively sleepy Sunday.
