Biography

Mary Schliff, Coordinator of Music Education, received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa and a Master of Arts degree in trombone performance from the University of Vermont, Burlington. She also holds a California Life Teaching Credential.

Prior to her appointment at CSUN, Ms. Schliff had a wide range of professional experiences teaching pre-school through high school music, both general-classroom and instrumental in Iowa, New York and California. She served on the faculty of Glendale College Child Development Department and as a visiting lecturer in music education at UCLA. Her teaching areas at CSUN include Early Childhood, elementary and secondary music education. She is the undergraduate and credential advisor in Music Education and Student Teacher Coordinator. Under her leadership, the CSU Northridge MENC Collegiate Chapter won state and national awards in 2001 and 2003 and 2004 for Chapter Growth and Excellence.

Professional affiliations include AOSA (American Orff-Schulwerk Association) SCSBOA, College Music Society, CALCOMTE (California Council on Music Teacher Education) CMEA Southern Section, CMEA, MENC, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Ms. Schliff recently served two terms as Vice President of CMEA and is currently serving as Collegiate and TRI M Representative for CMEA and as Western Representative for the Society of Music Teacher Education. In 2004, she received the CMEA John Swain Outstanding Collegiate Educator award and in 2001 she was honored with a lifetime membership in LACESMA, Los Angeles City Elementary School Music Association.
