Biography

Alexandra Monchick is Professor and Area Coordinator of Musicology at CSUN, where she has taught since 2011. She is a respected scholar on the music of the Weimar Republic, in particular for her work on Paul Hindemith. Dr. Monchick has published in journals such as The Musical QuarterlyGerman Life and Letters, and Theoria, and has a chapter in the recently published Oxford Handbook of Spectral Music. She is currently co-authoring a book with her colleague Wolfgang Marx on music in the “Post-Truth” era. A dedicated teacher, Prof. Monchick also publishes and presents on pedagogy and curriculum development in music as well as general Higher Education. A past president of the Pacific Southwest Chapter of the American Musicological Society, she now serves as the region’s representative to the national AMS Council. Dr. Monchick is also a passionate ally of CSUN’s LGBTQ+ community.

 Dr. Monchick holds a bachelors in Flute Performance from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in Historical Musicology from Harvard. Born and raised in Boston, Prof. Monchick is an avid sports fan, especially of the NFL. She wishes the New York Jets would call her for some coaching help.
