Children's Swim Lessons (Summer)

It’s never too early for your child to become a better swimmer and build confidence in the water! These specially-designed lessons are available to the children, grandchildren, and dependents of SRC members during the summer. Classes for all ability levels are offered every Saturday, and all lessons are taught utilizing the American Red Cross guidelines and teaching techniques.

  • Conveniently located at the SRC Rec Pool
  • Five lessons — 25 minutes, once a week on Saturday for five weeks
  • Only $23 per child for SRC members
  • Class size: 3 to 7
  • Register at the SRC front desk or online

Any non-member who wants to sit on the deck and watch must purchase spectator passes for $1.

Please be advised that parents will be required to bring the following items on the first day of lessons:

  • Swim lesson card from prior SRC swim lesson (if applicable)
  • Child’s birth certificate to be presented at the front desk of the SRC. (This is mandatory unless you have previously presented these documents at the SRC and a profile has already been made for your child.)

Please arrive at least 15 to 30 minutes prior to the start of the lesson in order to give sufficient time for sign-ins.

Summer 2017 Children’s Swim Lessons will be held on Saturdays each week for five weeks. You can choose one of three sessions that will work best for you and your little swimmer.

Session 1: Saturday, June 3 – Saturday, July 1
Session 2: Saturday, July 8 – Saturday, Aug. 5
Session 3: Saturday, Aug. 12 – Saturday, Sept. 9

Swim Lesson Times:
9:30 – 9:55 a.m. – Tiny Tots, Level 1, 2 and 3
10 – 10:25 a.m. Parent & Me*, Level 1, 2, and 3
10:45 – 11:10 a.m. Tiny Tots, Level 1, 2 and 4
11:15 – 11:40 a.m. Parent & Me*, Tony Tots, Level 4 and 5

*Parents & Me requires at least one parent per child to be in the water. Non-members who want to get in the water must purchase a guest pass for $10.

Parents can request a FREE swim diaper from any lifeguard. Swim diapers are required for the following levels:

Children’s Swim Lessons Prerequisites

Parent & Me: (ages 6 months to 3 years) Little to no experience in the water – parent required.
Tiny Tots: (ages 3 to 4) Little to no experience in the water; can begin to perform basic water movement, including kicking and gliding.
Level 1: (ages 5+) Little to no experience in the water; can begin to perform basic water movement, including gliding, kicking, arm movement, and floating on front and back.
Level 2: (ages 5+) Some experience in the water; can push off wall and kick; comfortable placing face in water and floating on front or back with assistance
Level 3: (ages 5+) Can push off wall and perform the front stroke and backstroke for 10 feet without assistance
Level 4: (ages 5+) Ability to swim 25 yards front stroke and backstroke; familiarity with breaststroke and elementary backstroke; can tread water for up to 30 seconds
Level 5: (ages 5+) Ability to swim 50 yards of front stroke and backstroke, 25 yards of butterfly and breaststroke; can tread water for up to 30 seconds

Private & Semi-Private Swim Lessons (All Year)

Private and semi-private lessons provide participants with the opportunity to learn at your own pace and can be adapted for all ability levels. Choose a lesson time that works with your schedule and our instructors will help you to meet your personal swimming goals. Lessons are available Monday through Sunday during the regular pool hours of operation. You can get started by registering at the SRC front desk and our aquatics staff will contact you to arrange your private lessons. All private and semi-private lessons are 30-minutes and scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Adult Lap Swim & Stay Fit Workouts (All Year)

The Lap Swim and Stay Fit Workout Program is a fun and healthy balance between fitness and instruction. We offer a variety of aquatic workouts to meet individual needs and goals. This program allows you to swim your way into shape on your own time.

Adult Beginner Swim Lessons (Fall and Spring)

Beginner swim lessons are for adults with little or no comfort in the water. Participants will learn how to hold their breath, float, get an introduction to the basic strokes and learn basic water safety skills.

Monday/Wednesday Lessons (Oct. 2 – 25)

Adult Intermediate Swim Lessons (Fall and Spring)

Intermediate swim lessons are for adults that have completed adult beginner or have equivalent skills. Participants in this class are comfortable in the water, but need stroke and stamina improvement. Participants will continue stroke development in freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke and improve their water fitness.

Lifeguard Certification at the SRC (Fall and Spring)

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and provide care for breathing and cardic emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.

All meetings will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SRC Conference Room/Plaza Pool.


Mandatory requirements: 

  • Clothing: Participants will need a bathing suit for all six meetings.

All Lifeguard Certification participants will need to demonstrate these prerequisites:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing
  2. Tread water for two minutes using only their legs
  3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water, but swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point. With both hands holding the object, keep your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water using a ladder or steps.

If participants fail to demonstrate these prerequisites, they will receive a refund for the full amount. 

Certification Requirements:

  • Attend all six class sessions
  • Receive an 80% or better on the written test in all sections (CPR/AED/First Aid/Lifeguarding)
  • Successfully demonstrate all skills and rescues in the water

Key Log Rolling (Fall 2017)

It’s time to test your balance and get a great full-body workout with with Key Log Rolling at the SRC. You just step onto the spinning log and try to stay on your feet, like log rolling events on TV! The Key Log spins like a traditional wooden log and it’s an excellent way to improve your endurance and build core strength. Take a break from your normal routine to try an exciting and unique workout that challenges your body like nothing else.
