Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society Induction Ceremony

There is no Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society Induction Ceremony for Spring 2023. Due to a delay in order processing and shipping, we were not be able to host an induction ceremony, however membership materials and regalia orders will be available for pick up from the CJS Department Office (Sierra Hall 165).

CJS Instructor Takes a Job Up North

CJS Instructor Darrell Lowe

The department of Criminology and Justice Studies is sad that one of our Instructors, Darrell Lowe is no longer teaching for CJS or CSUN, We are however, quite happy for the reason he left Southern California.

CJS Lecturer and CSUN Alum (Soc’ 2000). Captain Darrell Lowe a 26 year veteran of the Santa Monica Police Department has been selected as the Chief of Police for the Redmond Washington Police Department, selected from a national search that elicited 54 applicants.

Meet the new Chief of Police - Redmond, Washington

Captain Lowe is a seasoned and accomplished member of the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD). A graduate of the 249th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia, Cal-Chiefs Executive Leadership Institute- Drucker School of Management at Claremont University, The Safer Communities Institute at the University of Southern California.

Captain Lowe holds a Master degree in Emergency Services Administration from Cal State University Long Beach, Bachelors degree in Sociology from Cal State University Northridge. A POST Master Instructor, Certified curriculum developer and designer, and published author.

Captain Lowe worked a variety of Operational assignments at SMPD including Patrol, School Resource Officer, 3rd Street Promenade Bike Patrol, A variety of Administrative assignments Including Internal Affairs, Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief, Executive Officer of both the Operations and Investigations Divisions.

During his tenure, Captain Lowe was very engaged in the Santa Monica community representing the department as a board member of Kiwanis, Boys and Girls club, West-side Inter-faith council, Human Relations Council, Citizens for Racial Justice, Citizens for Police Reform, and a supporter for the Santa Monica Police Activities League (PAL), Police Explorer Post, and the recently launched Juvenile Diversion Program which seeks alternative and Restorative Justice ways to engage and interact with youth who violate the law.

Captain Lowe was the architect of both the Santa Monica Police Department’s beat reconfiguration when the Metro light-rail returned to Santa Monica, and it's updated Warrant due-diligence protocol.

Captain Lowe has been the Department’s lead facilitator for its Constitutional Policing, Procedural Justice and Implicit Bias training curriculum training the departments entire (500) personnel .

The Redmond City Council recently met and approved the hiring of Chief Lowe.

The CJS Department thanks Chief Lowe and looks forward to hearing good things from Redmond, Washington.

The Bandana Project

This year during Sexual Assault Awareness Month CSUN's Criminology and Justice Studies Department is recognizing survivors of sexual violence that are often invisible. As a department we will be participating in The Bandana Project, an art-activism project that provides a visible demonstration of our support for farmworker women and girls and our commitment to ending sexual violence in this community. Sexual violence must be eradicated in the workplace and every place!

Farmworker women are particularly vulnerable to sexual violence and may experience multiple barriers to accessing resources within the Criminal Justice System. Language barriers, the migratory nature of farm work, fear of police and other issues often contribute to their vulnerability and the invisibility of the issue.

CSUN CJS faculty, staff and students are shining a light on the experiences of this community during Sexual Assault Awareness Month by creating "Bandana's" that show our support for this community. Freshmen Orientation - Fall 2019

Freshmen Orientation

Criminology and Justice Studies (CJS) Faculty were on hand to welcome and speak with some the new CJS students during the Freshmen Orientation. CJS is excited to welcome more than 275 first time freshmen for the fall 2019.

Dr. Marc Glidden, joins the CJS Faculty this fall 2019. Dr. Glidden welcomed the incoming freshmen.

CJS welcomes the freshmen and all CJS students to come by the department office, Sierra Hall 165, with questions, and or to just say hello.

CJS Graduating Classes of 2018 to 2023

The department of Criminology and Justice Studies proudly congratulates every CJS student that completes their degree with us. Every year our numbers grow and we look forward to seeing our students' success being recognized as they walk across stage.

The graduating class of 2018 was our first graduating class and witnessed 82 Criminology and Justice Studies walked across stage after the establishment of our department in Fall 2017.
In the class of 2019, 289 Criminology and Justice Studies students graduated!
In the class of 2020, our department congratulated 354 students despite the sudden shift to learning remotely due to the Coronavirus lockdowns.
In the class of 2021, 339 Criminology and Justice Studies students graduated!
In the class of 2022, 492 Criminology and Justice Studies students graduated (our biggest graduating class to date!)
In the class of 2023, 482 Criminology and Justice Studies students graduated!

Note: these numbers reflect students who manually changed their major from Sociology Option 2: Criminal Justice to Criminology and Justice Studies.
