A Message From the Director's Office

Greetings:

On behalf of the National Center on Deafness (NCOD) at California State University, Northridge, I welcome you to our website -- a virtual visit to our engaged community and exemplary programs.

Established in 1964, NCOD has pioneered in and demonstrates best practices in providing full and meaningful access to university programs and activities for students who are deaf and hard of hearing. NCOD offers quality in communications, connections and community, across the whole spectrum of the university – academics, co-curricular programs and residential living. The geographical region of southern California sparkles with many enticing opportunities and linkages in the arts, cultures, health and sciences, education, recreation, geography, history, economics and industries. The Deaf CSUNians and the NCOD Alumni chapter help to enrich learning and linkages. The result is a unified and holistic student development experience which continues life-long.

CSUN is recognized as a flagship university and model for academic and support services for all the members of our university community. Linkages are formed among students, faculty, students and communities. All of our programs and services are geared to our diverse students, each of whom has specific learning and career goals. NCOD offers academic and support programs for our students, ranging from orientation and direct communication classes to interpreters and captioners for mainstreamed university classes and co-curricular activities.

NCOD also provides information and training for service providers, professionals, families, teens, alumni, and managers in knowledge, skills and leadership development. NCOD is the western states site for PEPNet, a federally funded intensive in-service training, resource center and outreach program. The NCOD Library is a precious national collection of reference books, media and publications related to our field.

CSUN is also known as a sign language users community approaching 1,000 students, faculty and staff across various departments: Deaf Education, Deaf Studies, NCOD and PEPNet.
