Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam (UDWPE)

Attempting the UDWPE

Students who have completed 56 units and have met the lower division writing requirement are required to take an essay exam called the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam. Students should satisfy this requirement prior to completion of 75 units.  A passing score on the exam is required for enrollment in 400-level courses in the major.  For more information, please click here.

Appeal for an Extension

Students who have completed 75 units or more and have not attempted the UDWPE must register for the exam immediately. Students who are unable to sign up for the exam prior to their registration date, may submit an appeal to the Undergraduate Studies Office by clicking here.

ENGL 090 Information

Students who have attempted the UDWPE two or more times may consider taking ENGL 090 in order to prepare for the exam. This course provides intensive practice in writing effective expository prose under test conditions.
