Music Technology Lab

The 21st century musician must be a master not only of his or her specific music discipline, but also of all the technological tools that support modern music-making. The Music Technology Lab and the courses that utilize it were created to help students achieve this necessary skill set. The lab is designed to give students a broad variety of experiences with Music Technology hardware and software applicable to all music disciplines.

Numerous software applications are available in the lab including software for music notation, MIDI sequencing, digital audio recording and editing, synthesis and sampling, video editing, multimedia development, Computer-Assisted Instruction (CAI), CD/DVD authoring and burning, and general purpose computing such word processing, spreadsheeting, Internet access, and email.

All music majors must take an introductory Music Technology course (MUS 191/L) introduces them to the vast world of music technology with a strong hands-on component. Music Industry Studies and Media Composition Majors take an additional course (MUS 391/L) that covers more advanced topics in desktop music creation. In addition, the lab supports courses throughout the music department including the musicianship sequence (ear-training using MacGAMUT), composition courses, music education courses, etc.

There are 24 computer stations in the Music Technology Lab, each station consisting of:
